Developing a mark for any organization can be a weighty endeavor. In the end I believe logos should meet three criteria. It should be appropriate for the brand and their audience, it needs to be distinctive and memorable and it should be simple. Here are a few highlights from the past couple of years.

Mid-State Literacy Council

The Mid-State Literacy Council provides a variety of services to the community, so I wanted a logo that could represent learning, reading, studying and more. An open book can serve as a universal symbol for those themes. This logo was selected from other submissions at this year’s Brand-Aid event, where creative professionals donate their time and work to help a local non-profit with design and marketing services.

Invent Penn State Sub-Brands

When you are working on a growing set of logos that all need to fall under a parent brand, like brothers and sisters, the challenge is to make each one distinct but carefully crafted to work seamlessly together as a cohesive collection.

Personal Mark

Doing work for yourself is never easy. We are often our toughest critics. This mark was developed for my fly fishing guide service & custom fly tying.

Pac-5 Wrestling

The PAC-5 athletic program is a consortium of independent schools banding together to field teams for competitive sports in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Hawaii. The direction I was given was, “the mark should be simple, clean and something the kids can get behind.” The word wrestling was intentionally dropped early on in the hopes that the logo might be used for the entire program. The wrestling team is now outfitted with high-quality singlets, tees and sweatshirts that they are proud to wear.

Organic Gardening Magazine

The redesigned logo and masthead emphasized a crisp, “modern organic” feel to complement the redesign of the magazine and to make the mark more versatile.

Brendan’s Guide Service

As a young guide getting set up with a professional set of tools to market yourself can be a major hurdle. I hooked Brendan up with a logo, business cards, vinyl stickers and a website. See more about the project here.

Tap Root Kitchen

A proposed logo for an organization that supports individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (ID) who grow, pick, cook, and serve healthy local food. The group addresses a problem shared by many young adults with ID who, upon turning 21, leave high school and lose their major systems of support.
